Chelsey A. Pasamonte of Kailua-Kona was one of 1,159 students named to the 2013 spring semester dean’s list at Colorado State University at Pueblo. The list recognizes undergraduate degree-seeking students who have completed 12 or more credit hours with a minimum grade point average of 3.5.
Tsue receives her degree from UO
Katie Tsue of Captain Cook is among the students from 47 states and the District of Columbia who received degrees this spring on the University of Oklahoma at Norman campus.
Tsue earned a bachelor of science degree.
HFS awards seven scholarships
HFS Federal Credit Union has awarded $2,500 each to credit union members pursuing their goals of higher education. The scholarships are awarded to students in recognition of their academic excellence, personal and career goals, financial need and community involvement.
This year’s recipients are: Mahealani Yoshida, Konawaena; Zena Kiyota, Kellie Iwasaki and Owen Sandstrom, Waiakea; Christina Chow, Keaau; Natcha Srivichai, Pahoa; and Dallas Tada, Kamehameha Schools Hawaii.
Two receive degrees from Linfield College
Jason Cheyne of Waikoloa and May Leiilima Cong of Waimea were awarded degrees during Linfield College commencement exercises June 2 in McMinnville, Ore.
Cheyne was awarded a bachelor of science, exercise science degree and Chong a bachelor of arts, elementary education (cum laude).
Benbow gets State Department scholarship
Cody Benbow, a Kealakehe High School graduate, has been awarded one of approximately 625 National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarships for 2013-14.
The program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly-taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs. The program offers overseas study opportunities in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian Russian and Turkish.
The scholarship enables Benbow to study Arabic in Morocco for the year. The scholarship covers all program costs for participants including domestic and international travel; tuition and related academic preparation; language testing; educational and cultural activities focused on language learning; orientations; meals; and accommodations, usually with a host family.
Tourism group offers scholarships
The Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association is accepting applications for the awarding of two college scholarships established in tribute to two Hawaii tourism leaders.
The deadline to submit applications for this year’s Clem Judd Jr. Memorial Scholarship and R.W. “Bob” Holden Scholarship is Monday. Qualified college students can download the application forms online at hawaiilodging.org.

Sandulli named to Duke dean’s list
Justin McGreal Sandulli of Waimea was named to the dean’s list with distinction at Duke University for the spring 2013 semester. To make the Arts & Sciences dean’s list with distinction, students must rank in the top tenth of their college. Sandulli, an art history major, was among 719 students to attain this designation.
Strawn, Sims are scholarship winners
Two Kona students were awarded scholarships for the 2013-14 academic year by the P.E.O. organization. The students were sponsored by P.E.O. Chapter I, Kona.
Sarah Strawn, a graduate of the Myron B. Thompson Academy in Honolulu, was awarded the Hawaii P.E.O. Scholarship for a student from Hawaii who attends P.E.O.’s Cottey College in Nevada, Mo. Strawn, daughter of Valerie and Gary Strawn of Kona, plans to study genetic engineering.
Zoe Sims, a Hawaii Preparatory Academy graduation, received the P.E.O. Sisterhood’s STAR Scholarship. The scholarship is given to graduating high school senior women and must be used in the academic year following graduation. Sims, daughter of Kathryn and Neil Sims of Kona, plans to study ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton University.
Orr takes first place for script writing
More than 200 Hawaii students used their creativity to write commercial advertising scripts that encouraged their peers to prepare for college and careers in the “Take Charge of Your Future Commercial Script Writing Challenge,” sponsored by GEAR UP Hawaii, Oceanic Time Warner Cable and Clear Channel Hawaii. Hawaii public school students in sixth through 12th grade were invited to write a script for a 30-second commercial, which could be produced for television and radio. The contest received entries from 45 middle and high schools statewide.
Melia Orr, a ninth-grader at Kealakehe High School, placed first in the ninth and 10th grade category. She will receive an Apple iPad Mini.
Landowski earns spot on dean’s list
Nicole Landowski of Kailua-Kona was named to the spring 2013 dean’s list at Creighton University. Full-time students who rank in the top 10 percent of their class for the semester and earn a 3.5 grade-point average or better on a 4.0 scale are eligible for the dean’s list.
Creighton University is a Catholic, Jesuit institution located in Omaha, Neb.
